چکیده

H incur transaction costs when choosing among off-line stores for grocery purchases. They may incur additional transaction costs when buying groceries online versus off-line. We integrate the various transaction costs into a channel choice framework and empirically quantify the relative transaction costs when households choose between the online and off-line channels of the same grocery chain. The key challenges in quantifying these costs are (i) the complexity of channel choice decision and (ii) that several of the costs depend on the items a household expects to buy in the store, and unobserved factors that influence channel choice also likely influence the items purchased. We use the unique features of our empirical context to address the first issue and the plausibly exogenous approach in a hierarchical Bayesian framework to account for the endogeneity of the channel choice drivers. We find that transaction costs for grocery shopping can be sizable and play an important role in the choice between online and off-line channels. We provide monetary metrics for several types of transaction costs, such as travel time and transportation costs, in-store shopping time, item-picking costs, basket-carrying costs, quality inspection costs, and inconvenience costs. We find considerable household heterogeneity in these costs and characterize their distributions. We discuss the implications of our findings for the retailer’s channel strategy.

Measuring the Frictional Costs of Online Transactions: The Case of a Name-Your-Own-Price Channel

We study the offers submitted by consumers to a large Name-Your-Own-Price (NYOP) online retailer. A distinctive feature of this retailer is that it allows consumers to repeatedly submit offers on one and the same product. While consumers could identify the threshold price (the minimum price for which the retailer is willing to sell) by incrementing their offer in small steps in each consecutive...

Comparing Price Dispersion on and off the Internet Using Airline Transaction Data

The internet presumably reduces search costs and creates an “efficient” market. Prior research quantifying the dispersion in the electronic market, however, has yielded mixed results. Some recent research has documented very low levels of dispersion in internet attributing it to the use of transaction prices as opposed to posted prices. We revisit this issue using contemporaneous online and off...

Developing A Framework For Multi Channel Strategies . An Analysis Of Cases From The Grocery Retail Industry

Based on ongoing research in multi channel management, we are proposing a simple taxonomy of multi channel strategies. Cases from the grocery retail industry are not only used to illustrate four core strategies but also to study contingencies for the choice of the respective strategies. Furthermore, the cases are used to analyze the alignment of corporate marketing and online channel strategies.

Ebay or Craigslist?: Explaining Users’ Choice of Online Transaction Community

In this paper we examine users’ rationale for choosing a particular online transaction community. Based on transaction cost economics (TCE), we hypothesize that transaction costs affect users’ choice. We compare different institutional mechanisms – eBay’s identity recognition and reputation system vs. Craigslist’s face-to-face item-forcash local transaction. We also identify other factors relat...

Formation of B2C Channel Blending Decisions: Trust vs. Efficiency

Trust is known to be vital to business to customer (B2C) electronic commerce adoption. However, its role in customers’ blending of the online and traditional channels is largely unexplored. In this study, we progress beyond single channel adoption and investigate the interplay of trust and perceived efficiency on channel blending. Our conceptual framework models channel blending as a dynamic co...
